Why I read Newspaper ?

Amidst of Corona Pandemic, I have better reasons now to support my idea of reading a newspaper over reading social media posts for news and information. Whatsapp and twitter have gone deep into people's lives that they don't need anything else to know information and news. Unfortunately, They don't realise that they are infamous tools to spread misinformation and rumours. I understand that it takes a little more effort to read a newspaper article over a WhatsApp forward. But, Let me tell you it is worth the effort, as you get closer to the factual information. Call me old fashioned or someone more concerned with factual information. Generally, I like to examine the facts in the article before believing it. Online articles getting shorter with every passing day, we must switch to better reliable sources like a newspaper. I would personally recommend everyone to read the editorial section as it covers a variety of news/perspectives. I still think newspapers are ...

Detoxing - Saying 'No' to Social Media for 30 days

Day 1: I usually wake up and check for the time on the phone to see if I can squeeze in little more time to sleep. As soon as I wake up, I check my social media accounts like Whatsapp and facebook. But, Now with detox, I could only check my emails. It was tough to give up this habit. My commute to the office takes more than an hour. So, It was a predicament not to check my WhatsApp or facebook. But, I did succeed not checking social media accounts. All thanks to hidden space(feature on oneplus phones) to hide social media apps. I reached office and do get leisure time in office. I watched 'Two and a half men' from Prime video to pass the boredom, read a few pages of 'Hag-seed' by Margaret Atwood. In between, I also took a philosophy course on Courseera. While commuting back from office, I watched cricket for a while. I reached home around 10 pm and texted a couple of friends before my bedtime, and they responded promptly. The first day has been do-ab...

Sensitizing Racism

I am glad most of us don't encourage racism. But, does that mean because we don't show racism in our behaviour suffice to stop racism.?  Here is my problem, The everyday content we watch on TV's and reality shows address racism in a negative light. We enjoy jokes being made on gender and colour discrimination. Are we here encouraging racism?? TV channels and reality shows should take proper measures to curb racism. People around do observe us, at least a few and try to imitate our behaviour. Let us together set the right example by fighting against racism and avoid shows which promotes racism even in unintended ways.
A thought passed through my mind when I was having a conversation with one of my friends. I am a big movie buff and also an avid reader. I started to analyse what helps me to be rational and increase creativity. Movies are attractive and are pleasing to our eyes. Books, on the other hand, they are just plain text and a lot more tedious. Comparing both books and movies, Books give us time to imagine also helps to increase creativity. For example, Looking at an orange shown and imagining an orange written in the text are two different things. For both of us, Orange can be different. If you see it in a movie, it is just how it is shown. There is no time for creative juices to flow. You have to see what the director wants you to see. Just think, what is your forte? What do you enjoy most books/movies? I have given the reason why I love books more than movies.:)
Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain My rating: 4 of 5 stars It is always intriguing to know how personality affects a person through his/her life. This book gives various examples of hidden power in introverts and what they mean to the world. Several excerpts from the book are interesting and thought-provoking. I really liked Free trait theory mentioned in the book. A personality is not innate but it can have limits, a person can act in both ways as an introvert and, an extrovert accordingly I recommend to anyone and everyone. The book may instill boredom at places but once your past that you reap benefits. View all my reviews
Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri My rating: 3 of 5 stars 'Interpreter of Maladies' is a collection of six short stories. One thing common among all the stories is the nativity. Jhumpa Lahiri portrays real-life characters in all the short stories. It is so relatable when you read about them. I specifically liked the third and fourth chapters of the book. One of the stories is about a teen girl, who is always suffering from ailments. She cannot move much and is confined to a single room. She always wishes to lead a normal life, but is a burden to her family. This story is well crafted and is a must-read among the stories. I have read previous books of Jhumpa Lahiri. This book a bit exaggerated for the content it has. Nevertheless, It can be picked up. View all my reviews

Water Saving Tips

Everyone in this world knows the value of water but, very few pledges to save water. Here are my tried and tested tips to save water without needing much effort. 1. We often wash vegetables before cooking and throw away the water. Instead, We can reuse it to water plants or for domestic purpose. 2. We also use tamarind juice in many home cooked dishes. The leftover tamarind paste can be used to clean utensils. 3. The soap/detergent water after washing clothes can be used to clean dirty furniture/floors. 4. A lot of people use a water filter at home. The unclean water from the filter can be reused for domestic purpose. 5. Make sure all the water taps are leak proof. This simple check can save a lot of water. Please think before you throw away the water and see if you can use water for any household purpose.
