Detoxing - Saying 'No' to Social Media for 30 days

Day 1:

I usually wake up and check for the time on the phone to see if I can squeeze in little more time to sleep. As soon as I wake up, I check my social media accounts like Whatsapp and facebook. But, Now with detox, I could only check my emails. It was tough to give up this habit.

My commute to the office takes more than an hour. So, It was a predicament not to check my WhatsApp or facebook. But, I did succeed not checking social media accounts. All thanks to hidden space(feature on oneplus phones) to hide social media apps.

I reached office and do get leisure time in office. I watched 'Two and a half men' from Prime video to pass the boredom, read a few pages of 'Hag-seed' by Margaret Atwood. In between, I also took a philosophy course on Courseera.

While commuting back from office, I watched cricket for a while. I reached home around 10 pm and texted a couple of friends before my bedtime, and they responded promptly.

The first day has been do-able. I am surely going to find new hobbies and also get more time to work on myself. Overall, A productive first day.

DAY 2

This weekend is way more different. I can't post anything about reading or binge-watching. Glad, I don't have the habit of posting every activity I do on social media. I went to watch a movie with a friend and came back disappointed as it was pathetic. I was happy spending quality time with a friend of mine.

To enjoy doing nothing is also pleasure sometimes and, I do it quite often.*irony*

DAY 3

Sunday always creates mixed feelings because you don't know to stay happy for a holiday or feel sad that it is going to be the same routine from tomorrow. Waking up to a couple of texts from my friends, It was a good start. I had the freedom to stay lazy and sip coffee.

It was afternoon already, completed all my daily chores and started to binge on 'two and a half men' after lunch. On the other hand, I did complete my much-needed philosophy course for the week.

Day 4

Festival Time!Ganesh Chaturthi

I often feel we got rid of the habit, to call and wish people on festivals or birthdays, Wishing people has just become a mere WhatsApp status or a message.

I am glad I did not do the same as people, I did call or at least sent a text message to people wishing them on the festival.

The Ganesh puja and festivities continued till the evening at my home.
I miss the part of visiting nearby Ganesh pandals and look at the variety. The blame is on heavy rains. Also, I am glad people have bought eco-friendly Ganesha knowing the ill effects of POP.

I have got used to avoiding social media. I am sure it is going to bring a positive change.

I pray to God to shower all the blessings on you people.

Day 5

Back to Routine.

Waking up early in the morning is not my forte. I like to do things at my own pace. Thanks to flexible office hours.

I text people and, I often hear people complaining "why are you not on WhatsApp? "and are also pissed at me. I tell them that it is my choice and ask them to bear with it.

Most of them agree that the office is boring, With no social media, imagine. It is tough to pass-through the day. I do have hobbies like reading books, watching documentaries on mythology and history. These hobbies help me get through the day. Suggest all of you try out new habits.

STAY TUNED FOR DAY 6 UPDATES.

A thought passed through my mind when I was having a conversation with one of my friends. I am a big movie buff and also an avid reader. I started to analyse what helps me to be rational and increase creativity. Movies are attractive and are pleasing to our eyes. Books, on the other hand, they are just plain text and a lot more tedious. Comparing both books and movies, Books give us time to imagine also helps to increase creativity. For example, Looking at an orange shown and imagining an orange written in the text are two different things. For both of us, Orange can be different. If you see it in a movie, it is just how it is shown. There is no time for creative juices to flow. You have to see what the director wants you to see. Just think, what is your forte? What do you enjoy most books/movies? I have given the reason why I love books more than movies.:)

Cycling - Is it just an activity?

Cycling and life are synonymous when it is juxtaposed metaphorically. Cycling has turned out to be my recent obsession after books. I realized how important it is for me to have a trip with myself. Sometimes,  Solitude can solve problems or at least promote clear thinking. For me, Cycling turned out to be one such activity where I retrospect my day and plan it. Cycling and music go hand in hand. I now calculate the distance of my travel with the number of songs. If you know me, You might consider my cycling activity, as my initial excitement that comes after you buy something brand new.  But, I have found a solution to this problem, which is to make cycling a part of my daily routine.  " Pain is inevitable, whereas Suffering is optional " is one of my favorite quotes of  Murakami. The beauty of this quote is it applies to everything you do in life. Whatever activity you take up, It pains, but to suffer because it is up to you. Don't give up. It is not my intentio...

Why I read Newspaper ?

Amidst of Corona Pandemic, I have better reasons now to support my idea of reading a newspaper over reading social media posts for news and information. Whatsapp and twitter have gone deep into people's lives that they don't need anything else to know information and news. Unfortunately, They don't realise that they are infamous tools to spread misinformation and rumours. I understand that it takes a little more effort to read a newspaper article over a WhatsApp forward. But, Let me tell you it is worth the effort, as you get closer to the factual information. Call me old fashioned or someone more concerned with factual information. Generally, I like to examine the facts in the article before believing it. Online articles getting shorter with every passing day, we must switch to better reliable sources like a newspaper. I would personally recommend everyone to read the editorial section as it covers a variety of news/perspectives. I still think newspapers are ...
